The William Joseph Music Foundation

The William Joseph Music Foundation was established in 2005 with the aim of reviving the Arts. Today we are a registered Non Government Organization under section 80G that focuses on empowerment of the economically and socially weak through the Arts.

The foundation is an offshoot of the William Joseph International Academy for Performing Arts started by Dr Ashley William Joseph, a renowned musician in the Country. The Academy has been operational since 2003 and already has several accolades to its credit; the most prestigious one is being selected by the international Olympic Committee to record the theme song for the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a 300 piece children’s choir. Through The Foundation, we have already started outreach programs in slums and orphanages throughout the city of Bangalore. These programs are aimed at educating and improving the lives of homeless children who have no access to Music or any other form of Art. We are currently working with over 130 children and youth in the city.

AIMS

Why Homeless Children?

We decided to start our first project with homeless children because they are one of the most vulnerable groups in the city. These children have been abandoned by their ‘so called’ loved ones at the most crucial time of their lives. Thus without adequate care and guidance many of them tend to go stray or fall prey to vicious predators. Through our project “Art and its expression - Our Land is Calling for you”, we intend to identify these children and interact with them in an attempt to guide them and expose them to the opportunities available to them as well as the dangers lurking close by. We also intend to mould them into responsible conscientious citizens who can voice their reality and inspire our society to mend its ways. Thus through these children we aim at vocalizing many prevalent issues like Environmental dilapidation, human right issues etc.

Why Arts?

Rabindranath Tagore once said “Music fills the infinite between two souls”

Victor Hugo the famous painter said that, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”

Music is a universal language that can break through all cultural, linguistic, social, religious and caste barriers. Music is created from the heart and molded by emotion. Music has the power to cause emotions to well up within us. The indisputable fact about music is its power to evoke emotions. Music is an extremely versatile medium of communication. It is capable of exploring all the features that are used in verbal communication. Moreover, it does so in an explicit and structured way, which makes it an interesting and useful window into human communication, in general.

Our Methodology

The students will learn basic techniques about music, history, construction of instruments, how to use recycle material, theoretical classes with professional specialized in different subjects; Exhibition of movies and other projects related to arts around the world; discussions about social and cultural themes. At the end of the workshops the children will have opportunity to show what have learned in public performances. The project aims to stimulate the reflection and awareness about the Human rights, live in community, cooperation, responsibility, and how to preserve the environment.

Long Term Goals

How You Can Help

We are constantly in need of volunteers who can spend time with the children. We need people who specialize in any form of the Arts (Music, Dance, Theatre, fine Arts etc.,

We are also looking at spreading our programs to many more locations. One of our long term goals is to establish a Cultural Centre in the city where people devoted to the Arts from all over the world can come together and exchange expertise. For this we need more volunteers, funds for infrastructure, educative materials, and international and corporate collaborations. You can also sponsor a child by undertaking the annual cost of the program. This would entail the child’s food, education and living expenses.
